Kepler is changing the face of satellite communications by launching a constellation of telecommunication nanosatellites! With the recent success of our Series A funding, a handful of early customers, and our first five satellites in orbit, Kepler is currently doubling in size!

Kepler is changing the face of satellite communications by launching a constellation of small telecommunication satellites. We are looking for a Lead PHY/MAC engineer to build the next generation of satellite IoT service by building an efficient and scalable air interface that will connect many IoT devices with the Kepler constellation.

As a Lead PHY/MAC engineer, you will be deeply involved in all phases of product development from initial feasibility studies to building the tools to monitor on orbit network performance. In particular you will have responsibility over the overall system performance then define sub system specifications, test plans, and product features in collaboration with a cross functional team of RF/hardware, software, digital design, and spacecraft systems engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible engineer for Kepler's air interfaces with a focus on next generation satellite IoT
  • Design and evaluate existing or new PHY and MAC layers for performance (power efficiency, spectral efficiency, implementation complexity, scalablity, interference robustness)
  • Develop models of overall network performance
  • Propose system architecture and define relevant requirements and test/verification plans for digital design, software, hardware, RF, spacecraft teams
  • Approve sub system design and subsystem verification results
  • Requirements

  • 5+ years relevant experience in MAC and/or PHY architecture, algorithm design, and simulation for wireless systems
  • Senior / lead role in PHY/MAC development for wireless communication standard or equivalent (3GPP, 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, LoRa, SigFox, NB-IoT, etc.)
  • Good understanding of communication theory, signal processing and related algorithms, MAC protocols and procedures, and associated performance trade offs
  • Familiar with simulation environments and programming languages/tools (C/C++/python/MATLAB) as applied to PHY/MAC design
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work well across a cross-functional team
  • First principles approach to problem solving
  • Bonus Points

  • Experience in a standardization working group
  • Ground up design of a protocol, product, or experience in a startup environment
  • ASIC / RFIC experience
  • Management/leadership experience/capability : 1-10 direct reports
