Communication Systems Modeling Engineer

Kepler is changing the face of satellite communications by launching a constellation of telecommunication nanosatellites! With the recent success of our Series A funding, a handful of early customers, and our first two satellites in orbit, Kepler is currently doubling in size!

We invest heavily to deliver the best products to our customers, and so we’re on the hunt for a top-tier Communication Systems Modeling Engineer. This position will be responsible for the modeling and simulation of Kepler and other operators’ GSO/NGSO satellite and terrestrial networks for the purpose of coordinating spectrum usage between operators. This position will interface between both engineering and regulatory teams, providing inputs to both regulatory decisions regarding coordination and spectrum licensing as well as engineering systems design.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software capable of simulating the interference to, from and between NGSO and GSO satellite networks including their terrestrial counterparts
  • Own the understanding and implementation of ITU and other regulatory body technical documents regarding transmission, propagation, interference and coordination
  • Develop the technical criteria for coordination agreements between operators to ensure Kepler’s system is not unduly burdened by current and future systems
  • Assist the regulatory team in the development of multiple coordination strategies and associated documentation
  • Provide technical feedback to the engineering team to drive future RF and communications system design
  • Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent
  • 2+ years scientific programming experience in Python, Matlab or similar language
  • Strong understanding of RF fundamentals: EM theory, propagation, radio and antenna figures of merit, link budgets, interference
  • Basic understanding of communications theory: digital signal processing, digital modulation formats such as BPSK/QPSK, forward error correction, bit error rates, channel access schemes
  • Bonus Points

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in RF systems, wireless communications or signal processing
  • Experience with satellite communications, in particular, knowledge of NGSO communication systems, regulatory requirements and filing, spectrum coordination
  • Knowledge of modern communications standards: 3G, 4G, 5G, 802.11, 802.14, DVB
  • Experience with tools for analyzing satellites communication systems: STK, Visualyse
